ENVIRONMENTAL officers are appealing for information after hundreds of litres of used motor oil were illegally dumped at a protected site in North Wales for the second time.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said several drums containing waste oil were discovered at Moel y Crio, near Halkyn, prompting a joint response with the North Wales Police Rural Crime Team.

According to NRW, the drums contained at least 200 litres of used motor oil, with a significant quantity having leaked into the surrounding ground.

The incident is particularly concerning because the site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), meaning it is legally protected due to its environmental importance.

NRW said the pollution is causing harm to the local environment and warned that fly-tipping of hazardous substances can have long-lasting impacts on wildlife, habitats and soil quality.

Officers recently attended the site following reports of the illegal dumping and are now seeking help from the public to identify those responsible.

A spokesperson for Natural Resources Wales North East said the latest incident marked the second occasion that used motor oil had been fly-tipped at the location.

The discovery comes following an operation between NRW and the Rural Crime Team to target off-road bikers and other vehicles disrupting the Halkyn SSSI.

Officers focused their efforts on identifying riders and drivers using motorcycles, quad bikes and other vehicles illegally on protected land. Such activity can cause significant damage to wildlife habitats, vegetation and historic landscapes.

Anyone with information about the pollution incident is urged to contact NRW on 0300 065 3000 or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
