Clwyd MS Darren Millar has welcomed a recommendation to pause plans to introduce a tourism tax in the local authority area.
The proposal, put forward by Conwy County Borough Council officers, follows a consultation in which more than 62 per cent of respondents opposed the introduction of a visitor levy.
Mr Millar said: "Having opposed plans for a tourism tax from the start, I welcome the recommendation by officers at Conwy County Borough Council.
"Plans to charge tourists more to stay overnight in North Wales will make holidays more expensive, and make our visitor economy less competitive than other holiday destinations in the UK."
The proposed levy, which could be up to £1.30 per night, raised concerns among officers about a potential decline in overnight visitors and a negative impact on the local economy.
Many businesses in the area, including shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, depend heavily on tourism.
Mr Millar said: "Many local businesses, such as shops, post offices, cafes, pubs and restaurants, rely on visitor spending to survive all year round, it would be foolish to push their customers away by taxing them for holidaying in the area.
"I hope that local councillors accept the recommendation and pause these plans."
