A RARE funnel cloud was seen forming over the Dee Estuary today (Thursday, August 20), attracting attention from residents across Flintshire and prompting a flurry of photographs and social media posts.
The weather phenomenon was observed during the day above the estuary, with several people reporting sightings from locations along the Flintshire coastline. Images shared online appeared to show a distinctive cone-shaped cloud extending downwards from a larger cloud base above the water.
A funnel cloud develops when a rotating column of air becomes visible as condensation forms within it. While funnel clouds can resemble tornadoes, they do not officially become tornadoes unless the rotating column makes contact with the ground or water surface.
