AN area of the Afon Clwyd by Rhyl's Blue Bridge could potentially be polluted, with reports resulting in an inspection of the area.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said it had received reports of potential pollution of the river near the Foryd/Blue Bridge.

NRW has conducted initial inspections and taken samples from the area, but believe the phenomenon to be Phaeocystis, a naturally occurring, non-toxic algae commonly found in coastal waters.

Phaeocystis can form a brown, frothy scum that is harmless and may be linked to the recent hot weather.

A NRW spokesperson said: "To report potential pollution incidents, call our 24/7 incident hotline on 0300 065 3000 or use our online form: Natural Resources Wales / Report an environmental incident."

They added: "We have received reports of potential pollution on the Afon Clwyd near the Blue Bridge in Y Rhyl.

"Initial inspections suggest it is Phaeocystis, a naturally occurring, non-toxic algae commonly found in coastal waters.

"It can form a brown, frothy scum that is harmless and may be linked to recent sunny weather and warmer temperatures.

"Samples have been taken and we are awaiting results to confirm this.
