The Picture House, on Princes Drive, Colwyn Bay, is closed from today (Thursday, June 25) and is set to reopen on July 28.
It is to allow refurbishment work to take place and for the creation of a new beer garden.
The work comes more than 19 months after planning approval was granted for the scheme.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “The Picture House is a very popular Wetherspoon pub. We are committed to offering our customers the best possible pub to visit.
“As a result we are creating a new beer garden as well as a refurbishment of the pub.
“We apologise to customers for the inconvenience of the pub closing for approximately a month, however, we are confident they will welcome the pub’s new-look.
“The investment shows Wetherspoon’s commitment to the pub, its customers and staff as well as Colwyn Bay itself.”
The JD Wetherspoon pub was granted permission by Conwy County Borough Council planners in October 2024 for a new beer garden on land adjacent to the pub.
The 1,900 sq ft beer garden will include a covered area with booths, heat lamps, tables and chairs, while a fenced section will provide space for bins and recycling.
Following approval of the original plans, a further application was submitted for a DDA-compliant modern lift and associated drainage works. The lift - designed to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 - provides access for vertical movement inside the pub.
The current lift has deteriorated to the point it is no longer fit for use.
The proposals date back to August 2023, when The Pioneer reported that Wetherspoon was interested in land being disposed of by the council to create a beer garden.
At the time, a sign placed inside the Princes Drive pub read: “The Picture House, Colwyn Bay. Exciting new garden proposal. We need your help!”
The Picture House occupies a building with a long history. It opened in the early 20th century and operated as a cinema until 1981 before later being converted into a bingo hall.
After the bingo hall closed in 1997, the building was purchased by JD Wetherspoon and converted into a public house.
