CHESTER Zoo will close early on Thursday because of the extreme heat, members have been told.

The world-class facility has made the decision to close at 2pm as temperatures are set to soar into the late 30s and even 40 degrees in other parts of the country.

This has led to the zoo putting welfare of animals, staff and visitors first with a closure to keep people out of the sun.

In an email sent out late on Wednesday, a spokesman said: “Due to the extreme heat forecast for the afternoon of Thursday, June 25, we’ll be closing the zoo early at 2pm to help keep our visitors and colleagues safe.

“We apologise if this this disrupts your plans and appreciate your understanding.

“Will be open as normal on Wednesday and Friday and, as always, our dedicated teams will make sure all of the animals and plants are safely cared for.

“As you know, Chester Zoo’s habitats are designed with warmer and cooler patches that animals move between depending on what they need.

“Think shaded retreats, running water and swimming pools.

“Take care and we look forward to seeing you soon.”

The zoo is expected to return to normal opening hours on Friday, June 26.
