A LANDLORD and landlady are celebrating 25 years of ownership of a popular pub near Prestatyn.
Sue and Clinton Borders purchased the Eagle & Child Inn, at Lon Capel, Gwaenysgor, in 2001.
The husband-and-wife duo took the pub on as a second business, having owned the Central Beach Club, which their son Gavin now runs, since 1993.
Clinton was originally a civil engineer and is now a jack of all trades, combining chef, gardener, and maintenance roles (and everything in-between) at the pub.
Sue runs front of house, the office and paperwork and handles all the daily chores from deliveries to phone calls to customers.
The quarter of a century under the Borders has seen many customers pass through the doors with several becoming extremely close friends.
The Eagle & Child Inn survived the Covid-19 epidemic, with Sue and Clinton continuing to run the business as best as they could.
Clinton would serve takeaway food and, on some occasions, Sue would deliver to locals in the village who were unable to get out of the house.
The village people presented them with a plague of thanks for all their continued hard work and support throughout such a difficult time.
In 2007, the couple oversaw an extensive renovation of the pub, helping create a much large dining area and overseeing the maintenance of its immaculate garden and lawns.
The garden at the pub is so well-known that the establishment was nominated for 'Britain’s Best Beer Garden' in 2020, receiving more than 1,200 votes from the public.
Their daughter Sabrina and granddaughter Nia also work at the pub, alongside a small team of staff.
Looking back on 25 years, the Borders said: "We are a small team but a good one and are very thankful to all our staff for their continued hard work.
"25 years in Gwaenysgor has been full of good memories, lots of laughter, good times and fun, with a lot of long days, late nights and hard work along the way.
"We are proud of what we have achieved as in this trade it’s had its tough times!"
