ON this day last year, a former elm tree in Prestatyn’s Coronation Gardens underwent a remarkable transformation, marking a new chapter in its life.
Denbighshire County Council's Tree Team collaborated with wood carver Mark Earp to breathe new life into the dead tree, a matter that had been discussed by Wales in Bloom judges during their visit to the gardens the previous year.
Proposals to carve a sculpture from the tree were put forward to ensure the elm lived on for future generations to appreciate.
Mark Earp agreed to undertake the project free of charge and set to work crafting an owl sculpture made from the tree's wood, which would support the Friends of Coronation Gardens who help maintain the area.
At the time, Councillor Barry Mellor, the council’s lead member for environment and transport, and biodiversity champion, said: “Our tree team is extremely grateful to Mark for giving his time to create such a fantastic sculpture for the local community to enjoy while visiting the gardens.”
He added: “Thanks to him, the memory of this former elm tree will take flight for many people to admire at Prestatyn’s Coronation Gardens.”
