More than £3 million has been invested to modernise and protect a library of national importance.

The funding has supported improvements to the National Library of Wales, including upgrades to public areas, storage spaces for collections and digital systems.

It has also helped advance the library’s goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Jack Sargeant, minister for culture, said: "The National Library of Wales holds the memory of our nation, millions of stories, documents and artefacts that belong to every one of us.

"This investment ensures those treasures are protected for generations to come, while opening the Library's doors wider to families, communities and digital users across Wales and beyond."

Nearly £1.5 million of the funding was used to improve the library’s bookstacks, helping to preserve historic Welsh collections.

More than £500,000 was spent on updating public spaces, with improvements to the entrance, new exhibition areas and a children’s play space designed to make the library more welcoming to families.

Digital infrastructure was modernised with £421,000, which also funded strengthened cyber security and the launch of a new Data Foundry to improve online access to Welsh heritage materials.

Around £670,000 was invested in the library’s decarbonisation efforts, including upgrades to energy efficiency and expanding solar power capacity.

During a recent visit, Mr Sargeant saw first-hand how the funding is transforming the library.

Dr Rhodri Llwyd Morgan, chief executive at the National Library of Wales, said: "It was a pleasure to welcome the Minister to the Library and to have the opportunity to show how the funding is making a positive difference across a number of areas.

"We were pleased that the Minister could see the significant progress with decarbonisation and how the Library is working with local companies for the benefit of the community as a whole.

"We also showcased the work to develop new exhibition spaces as well as improvements to the visitor and user experience.

"At the heart of the Library’s mission is developing collections that tell the story of the people of Wales and seeing conservation work in action demonstrate the importance of collection care."
