A DEFRIBRILLATOR has been installed outside a pub in Towyn after more than £1,000 was raised to pay for it.
The lifesaving piece of equipment is now in place by The Seagull, on Towyn Road, following 12 months of fundraising.
Kellie Shepherd, who is still a regular at The Seagull despite living in Manchester, led the fundraising efforts, which included weekly auctions and raffles at the pub.
She said: “Throughout the year, we have raised enough money to buy and fit the defibrillator to the site of the pub, and for the cabinet for it to sit in.
“We have also paid extra money for this to be a 24-hour defibrillator, and have also paid for a 'bleed it'.
“This is all thanks to the generosity of our lovely customers at our weekly auction that we run from The Seagull, and the holidaymakers that came throughout the year and also donated to the cause.
“We lost a friend a couple of years ago in Rhyl. Her daughter went to a defibrillator box but when she opened it, it wasn’t there.
“We don’t know if that would have saved her life, so we thought: ‘That’s what we want to raise money for’.”
For the next 12 months, Kellie is planning to raise raising money for St Kentigern Hospice, which is based in St Asaph.
She added: “Raising the money every Wednesday is good therapy for me. It gets me out of the house, and apparently, I’m funny!
“We just want to say thank you to everybody who donated, who put spare change in, or who bought raffle tickets.”
The Seagull added: "Thank you to (charity) London Hearts who helped, as they supplied the equipment at a lower cost.
"And a bigger thank you to Jay at JR Electrical for donating his time at no cost to install the defibrillator, and to make sure it is installed safely, securely, and fully compliant with current regulations.
"The defibrillator has now been registered with the local ambulance service."
