Young pupils have helped plant more than 600 trees in a project to support wildlife.
The tree-planting took place on the grounds of Ysgol y Llys and was delivered in partnership with Denbighshire County Council’s Biodiversity and Countryside Service.
The pupils planted a range of trees including alder, rowan, hazel, field maple, wild cherry, guelder rose, wayfaring tree, and crab apple.
Councillor Barry Mellor, lead member for environment and transport and biodiversity champion, said: "We are really grateful to all the Ysgol y Llys pupils for their fantastic work for creating this new area to support local nature to and to also benefit the wellbeing and learning of every pupil current and future."
The scheme was supported by the UK Government through the 2025/26 UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which awarded £278,600 to Denbighshire County Council for nature recovery across the county.
New habitats have been created on the school grounds including hedgerows, an orchard, and standard trees.
As well as promoting biodiversity at the site, the project offers long-term educational benefits for pupils who will now be able to learn about the environment through hands-on experience.
A silver birch was also planted as part of the habitat creation.
The species is known to support a variety of insects including aphids and provides a vital food source for the caterpillars of several moth species such as the angle-shades, buff tip, and pebble hook-tip.
The tree-planting has given pupils a chance to understand the practical role that hedgerows and trees play in supporting wildlife and creating sustainable environments.
Smaller trees were used to form hedgerows, which will become a living classroom as pupils observe how the habitat matures and develops over time.
Among the trees selected was the crab apple, valued for its early pollen and nectar that helps sustain bees in the spring.
The fruit is also a food source for birds including blackbirds, crows, and thrushes, as well as small mammals.
Mice, voles, badgers, and foxes all benefit from the tree’s seasonal fruit.
The project not only educates and connects children to nature but will also help locally to the absorption of carbon emissions.
The additional trees will absorb carbon emissions.
