ON this day in 2021, Meliden FC announced the appointment of Martin Jones as their new director of football.
This followed a period of upheaval at Prestatyn Town, where Jones had been a longstanding figure closely associated with former manager Neil Gibson.
This followed the recent unrest at Bastion Gardens following the takeover of club chairman Jamie Welsh, which resulted in manager Neil Gibson resigning after their JD Cymru North title triumph and a number of influential people behind the scenes also deciding to step away from the Seasiders.
The NWCFA Tier 4 (East) Premier Division side had been one of the main beneficiaries of the unrest at Bastion Gardens, and Jones decided to join The Miners as their new director of football.
Jones, addressing his new role at the time, said: "I’m really pleased and flattered to be asked to help out at Meliden Football Club. I hope to bring the experience of my previous roles at Prestatyn to The Miners. If I can help to progress the club in any way both on and off the field, then I will be delighted."
His appointment came alongside several other notable transfers to Meliden, where Mark Boulton, Johnathan Price, and Tony O’Reilly also joined the team.
Ron Squire was added to the Miners’ media team after gaining experience at Prestatyn during the previous campaign.
The club's manager at the time, Gaz Jones, added: "Having known Martin for a number of years I expect him to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club and I am looking forward to working with him."
"His appointment along with the others the club have made recently shows the determination and ambition to take Meliden to the next level."
He was part of the Town staff when they secured a memorable JD Welsh Cup win for the first time in their history and is highly respected around the domestic scene.
