Expect this car, the Jaecoo 5, to be the enormous Chinese Chery motor group's best seller in the UK. This small, fashionable boxy SUV can be had in combustion or full-electric forms and should look great in the gym car park.
As with its larger sibling, the combustion Jaecoo 5's signature feature is its large front 'waterfall' grille. As for the rest of it, well the Chery parent group's close links with Jaguar Land Rover are evidenced by the clear shades of Range Rover Evoque in the profile and rear sections. We said much the same about the Jaecoo 7 but the '5' packages all of this into significantly shorter proportions - there's just 4,380mm of body length, 120mm shorter than the '7' and about the same as a Ford Focus.
Virtually all the cabin functions are operated via a large central portrait touchscreen, complemented by a slim instrument panel seamlessly integrated into the dashboard. The overall design is minimalist, featuring a clean layout with very few physical buttons. Rear seat space provides comfortable accommodation for two adults, with room for a third when needed. Luggage capacity stands at 480 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to up to 1,180 litres when they are folded flat.
Power comes from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 145bhp and 275Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox driving the front wheels. Three driving modes — Eco, Normal and Sport — allow drivers to tailor the experience to their preferences. The chassis has been tuned for UK roads by Chery International’s European R&D centre, offering a balanced blend of comfort and stability. The model achieves 0–62mph in approximately 7.5 seconds, with a top speed of around 128mph.
An all-electric version, the Jaecoo 5 EV, features a 61.1kWh battery powering a 201bhp front-mounted electric motor, delivering an estimated driving range of up to 245 miles (WLTP). The model also incorporates Level 2 autonomous driving capability and includes 19 advanced driver assistance (ADAS) safety functions, underscoring its focus on technology and safety innovation.
