Plans are submitted for a new beachside café in Kinmel Bay

Work on a £13million flood defence project is underway, and will see about 80,000 tonnes of rock armour brought in to strengthen the current defences.

As part of this development, an application has been submitted to amend the original design of the building to be built on the car park at Kinmel Bay beach, at St Asaph Avenue.

The site will consist of a car park, beach café and kiosk.

The current approved building is for four toilets and a service area on the north-west corner of the site.

In the application, submitted to Conwy County Borough Council, George and Tomos Architects said: "The revised elevations are more contemporary and more suited to a beachside location and follow the previous design for a similar building at Colwyn Bay promenade."

If successful, three members of staff would be employed.

The beach car park at St Asaph Avenue had been closed for parking since October 7, 2024, when contractors started work at the site.

But it temporarily re-opened this summer after Conwy County Borough Council said contractors paused work on the flood defences in Kinmel Bay.

This was not expected to delay the project’s completion, which is still estimated for spring 2026.

Kinmel Bay’s planned coastal defence works should reduce flooding risks to more than 2,000 homes.

Normal working hours for the coastal defence improvements are 7am-6pm, Monday to Friday.
