Plans for padel sports centre to open in Kinmel Bay

Zak Hughes, of Kinmel Bay-based Padel World UK Ltd, has submitted plans for the creation of a padel centre at Tir Llwyd Enterprise Park.

The centre would take over the site of a bath factory, and would become the first dedicated padel centre in North Wales.

A 2,307 sq metre site, the padel centre could house up to 20 courts, according to planning documents.

Padel is a fast-growing sport played by more than 25 million people worldwide, and was first played in 1969, borrowing many elements from squash and tennis.

Despite having the same scoring system as tennis, its rules differ and it is usually played in doubles on an enclosed court.

The plans have been backed by Clwyd West MS and Welsh Conservatives Leader Darren Millar, who spoke of the "long-term social and economic benefits" it could create for the region.

In a letter to Conwy County Borough Council, Mr Millar said: "I am writing to express my support for the proposed development of Padel World, the first dedicated padel centre in North Wales.

"As the Member of the Senedd for Clwyd West, I am always pleased to see the development of new businesses in the local area.

"Given that padel is one of Europe's fastest-growing sports, I believe this project has significant potential and will be of great benefit to the local community, by promoting health and wellbeing, and creating new employment opportunities for local residents.

"I believe this initiative will deliver long-term social and economic benefits to the region and I would therefore be grateful if you could please note my full support for Padel World."

The proposal now awaits a decision by the council's planning committee.
