A HOUSING association is “evaluating responses” from members of the public about its plan to demolish Prestatyn’s former Territorial Army (TA) building and build new homes in its place.

Wales & West Housing Association wants to build a “100 per cent affordable” 47-home development on the land, on Marine Road.

But this would involve the demolition of the entirety of the old TA building, which was built exactly 100 years ago for the Brookes Brothers, who ran the White Rose garage and bus company.

A planning application has not yet been submitted, with a pre-application consultation period having ended on Monday (September 15).

Wales & West did not disclose how many responses it received, or when it will provide a further update, but said: “The pre-application consultation has ended and we are evaluating responses.”

Extracts from its planning documents read: “The proposal prioritises the redevelopment of previously developed land, involving the demolition of the former Army Reserve buildings.

“This approach supports the efficient use of land and contributes to urban regeneration.

“This planning statement has been prepared on behalf of Wales & West in support of the full planning application for the demolition and redevelopment of the former Army Reserve site to provide new affordable housing accommodation at Marine Road, Prestatyn.”

The proposal comprises 26 one-bedroom apartments, eight one-bedroom walk-up apartments, nine two-bedroom houses and four three-bedroom houses.

There will also be 50 car parking spaces and two accessible parking spaces.

Last November, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that the site had been sold, subject to contract, but did not disclose who the buyer is.

But on March 27, Wales & West lodged a search on Land Registry for the old TA site, in order to “protect a pending purchase”.

The value of the sale is not known, though the property was placed on the market with a guide price of £1.5million.

A petition to save the building, started by Prestatyn resident Gareth Ledsham-Jones, has received more than 1,000 signatures: www.change.org/p/save-a-prestatyn-landmark-object-to-the-demolition-of-the-historic-ta-building.

Another Prestatyn resident, Lyz Davies, has set up a Facebook group aiming to save the building from demolition: www.facebook.com/groups/353013202978021.

Supermarket chain Aldi shelved its plans to build a new store at the site in 2022, meanwhile.
