PLANS to demolish the former Territorial Army (TA) building in Prestatyn to make way for new housing have left residents and readers divided.

A petition has been launched against proposals put forward by Wales & West Housing Association, which wants to build a “100 per cent affordable” 47-home development on Marine Road.

The building, which dates back 100 years, was originally constructed for the Brookes Brothers, who ran the White Rose garage and bus company.

A formal planning application has yet to be submitted, but a pre-application consultation is open until September 15.

Prestatyn resident Gareth Ledsham-James started the petition, which has already attracted nearly 800 signatures: www.change.org/p/save-a-prestatyn-landmark-object-to-the-demolition-of-the-historic-ta-building.

Mr Ledsham-James wrote: "A proposal by the Wales and West Housing Association (WWHA) is threatening to demolish this historic structure to make way for an uninspiring, over-bearing housing block that is out of place with our thriving town centre and award-winning beach. This proposal ignores the building's historical significance and the community's desire to protect its heritage.

"The building, which was originally the 'White Rose' garage built by the Brookes Brothers, is a prominent gateway to our town. Demolishing it would mean losing another vital link to our past, following the recent loss of nearby Bodnant Infants School on Marine Road.

"We are not against progress, but we are against the destruction of our heritage. This building can be saved and restored.

"Demolition is a permanent and irreversible step that we must prevent."

Journal readers and Prestatyn residents have taken to Facebook to share their thoughts on the petition and what it being proposed for the building.

Some have called for the building to be preserved or repurposed.

One commented: "If it's not to be demolished, then use it otherwise it's just another empty building left to decay... surely."

Another wrote: "An indoor activity centra with climber walls, skating rink all sports centra for all ages would be grateful. Something for the locals and help the teenagers would be a great idea."

Others, however, feel the building has had its day.

One reader said: "We’ve only lived in the area for eight years and to be honest, always thought it a bit of an eyesore."

Another commented: "Save it for what? Its been an eyesore for years.

"We unfortunately can't hold on to everything someone is fond of, We have to move with the times. Unless there are some plans for the current building, I don't see the point."

Others expressed frustration at what they see as a lack of respect for local heritage.

One reader wrote: "Honestly, the lack of respect for our history and heritage by the current administration is unforgivable. Bulldozed and replaced by cheap, budget-constrained sheds."

Another posted: "Regardless of what the public wants, the round tables will decide its outcome."

Proposals for the site include 26 one-bedroom apartments, eight one-bedroom walk-up apartments, nine two-bedroom houses and four three-bedroom houses.

There will also be 50 car parking spaces and two accessible parking spaces.

Submissions can be made as part of the pre-application consultation period by emailing PublicConsultation@jll.com, or by writing to JLL Planning, Tenth Floor, Landmark, 1 Oxford Street, M1 4PB, by September 15.
