20mph: Readers views on roads being reverted to 30mph

The majority of residential roads throughout Wales changed from being 30mph to 20mph last September.

This was, according to the Welsh Government, to help 'save lives'.

But, the move has been heavily criticised by members of the public, politicians and more since it was introduced.

And more fuel was added to the fire as thousands of drivers were caught out speeding by the speed limit throughout 2024.

Now, councils across the country are in the process of reverting 20mph roads back to 30mph, in a move expected to cost millions.

Our readers have been getting in touch to share their views on this.

Delyth Davies told us: "They should just leave the 20 signed where it’s essential and make everywhere else back to 30."

Ray Matthews added: "Just put them all back to their proper speed limits. No need for anything complicated. They forced through the 20mph quick enough and they should put the speeds back to 30 mph quick enough too."

Len Easter said: "Will or could is not good enough all main roads should be back to the original speed."

Gavin Harris told us: "Where we live the 20mph is great. Sadly not all motorists stick to it. I’ve managed to cycle as an individual on a slight downhill within town in a residential area and get to 20mph. Perfectly fine, but then some idiot insists on overtaking, only to still do 20 in front of me and then get clogged in traffic. A wasted overtake.

"I ultimately ended up ahead. Just 20 is fine in town centres. Streets are for everyone. We all need to feel safe."

Adam Williams said: "All major roads, side streets and around school times keep at 20 as with around hospitals and care homes but it won’t happen as it’s common sense."

David Coney said: "Put them all back as they were, 20mph has achieved nothing."

Andrew Kearns concluded: "It’s been a total waste of money."

Richard Evans replied: " It has saved lives and life changing injuries according to car insurers' independent stats. Is that really a waste of money?"
