20mph: The roads North Wales councils hope to revert to 30mph

The majority of residential roads throughout Wales changed from being 30mph to 20mph last September.

This was, according to the Welsh Government, to help 'save lives'.

But, the move has been heavily criticised by members of the public, politicians and more since it was introduced.

And more fuel was added to the fire as thousands of drivers were caught out speeding by the speed limit throughout 2024.

Now, councils across the country are in the process of reverting 20mph roads back to 30mph, in a move expected to cost millions.

Here, we have compiled a list of the roads which are in the process of reverting/being discussed as possible reverts by their respective councils.

Data is now being collected to assess these sites, including looking at traffic speeds and flows and also historical road traffic collisions.

If the assessment suggests that a speed limit change should be considered, there will be a consultation with local residents, local members, town/community councils and the emergency services for their views.

Denbighshire

A list of over 200 roads has been put forward to Denbighshire County Council.

They are currently in the process of finalising their assessment of the 202 locations that were submitted.

Once that has finished, residents will be informed of the decisions made.

Flintshire

The following are currently in the process of being changed back to 30mph in the county;

Gwynedd council received 83 responses, leading to 28 road sections being reviewed and 18 were found not to meet the criteria.

A spokesperson said: "Consideration is currently being given to the feedback received before deciding on the locations which will move forward to a statutory TRO process. We expect this phase to get underway later this year."
