A MAN based in Rhyl has helped set up a North Wales-wide ambulance service for pets.

Kieren Barlow, 34, launched Pet Ambulance Services North Wales and Cheshire with his business partner several months ago, having felt he had spotted a “need for an animal transport service”.

He suffers from cerebral palsy himself, and as a wheelchair user and the owner of four dogs, Kieren said he would struggle himself to take them to a vet unaccompanied.

Prior to creating this service, Kieren had worked at Rhyl’s RSPCA branch for 12 years.

Kieren said: “I felt that there was a need for an animal transport service that would help people who don’t have transport, are disabled or are elderly, to have a better chance of getting their animals to the vet.

“Not only will this service help pets get the treatment they need, this service is also designed to help people who own animals, and people who struggle to transport their pets.

“This could be carrying a cat in a basket as it’s too heavy, or have a dog that pulls on the lead, or those that need the emotional support during their veterinary consultations.

“Sometimes, taking your pet to be seen by a vet can be stressful, emotional and hard work.”

Kieren’s service is available 24 hours a day, and also offers transportation of animals to groomers, rescues and between family members.

He and his business partner boast 24 years of experience in the animal welfare sector between them.

“Living with a long-term physical disability and having four dogs means that I, too, would struggle if I was to go to a vet on my own, which gave me this idea,” he added.

“I simply drive the pet ambulance - in addition, on board, is our pet ambulance carer, who will assist the owner in getting the animal on board, making sure they are secure and strapped in and also assisting the owner with any needs they have whether it be physical or emotional support.

“We’ll literally go anywhere in North Wales.”
