A CONWY county councillor representing the Kinmel Bay ward was invited to Buckingham Palace for a garden party last week.

Cllr Nigel Smith (Conwy First Independent Group) and his wife, Tracey, visited the palace on May 8, having been invited in recognition of his service to the community of Kinmel Bay, as well as the county of Conwy.

This was the first public event that King Charles III has attended since he made public his cancer diagnosis in February.

He was joined at the event by Queen Camilla, The Princess Royal, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Cllr Smith has represented the Kinmel Bay ward for the last 10 years, and was mayor of Towyn and Kinmel Bay in 2017.

During his 10 years’ service as both a town and county councillor, he has been chair of the planning committee, economy and place overview and scrutiny committee, and leader of the Independent Group.

He is now the cabinet member for sustainable economy.

Cllr Smith said he felt “highly honoured” to have been invited by the King to his garden party.

“The day could not have been any more perfect, and it was an experience that both Tracey and I will remember for the rest of our lives,” he added.
