A FISH and chip shop based in Rhyl is to welcome customers back 12 months after it had seemingly closed for good.

The Chippy, on Grange Road, shut last April, but will return next week under the same management but with a new name, The Fish & Chip Shop.

Dave Jones, who ran The Chippy prior to it closing, has agreed to take it back on after the property came under new ownership.

His family had been running it for more than three decades, he said.

Rhyl fish and chip shop in ‘shock’ closure after 30 years of business

Staff at The Chippy said news of its closure came as “shock” to them at the time, but it is now due to celebrate its first day back open next Wednesday (April 10).

Dave said: “We’d had The Chippy for going on 35 years. My dad started the business, and as a family, we’ve been involved in chippies for four or five decades.

“I wanted to re-open it because of the enjoyment of it all, and the history behind it. We’ve had loads of people getting excited about us re-opening, saying they can’t wait.

“Alongside me is another Rhyl family (owning the property), so it’s very much a Rhyl family-run business, because we’re all about local people.”

Prior to closing for good, The Chippy had reduced its opening hours earlier in 2023 after being left with “no option” because of “spiralling costs”.

The building has now undergone a large refurbishment, with new flooring and equipment now in place.

Its re-opening will also create at least five jobs, Dave added, while opening hours will be 11.30am-2pm, and 4.30-8pm, Monday to Friday.

New signage at the shop was due to be erected today (April 5).

Dave said: “It looks a lot better now – everything’s spot on.

“It’s more or less going to be run in the same way; we’ve always had a good reputation for food, so we’re just keeping it as a traditional fish and chip shop.

“All of the food is cooked fresh to order, and we try to help other businesses, so only use locally sourced products.”

The store is based next to sandwich and cake shop, Neens Butties and Bakes.

Owner Janine Roberts added: “I would just like to wish the new  owners, management and staff at The Fish & Chip Shop all the best going forward, from Neens Butties and Bakes.”
