A CHARITY shop in Rhyl has been honoured for its dedication to developing people’s skills at an awards ceremony in the town.

The Mind shop, the Rhyl branch of the UK-wide mental health charity, was named the winner of the “people development” prize at the Rhyl BID Business Awards on March 5.

Held at 1891 Bar and Restaurant, the ceremony saw 15 awards handed out to those striving to show off the best Rhyl has to offer.

Based on Bodfor Street, Rhyl’s Mind charity shop helps fund the organisation’s work supporting those with mental health issues.

In addition, the shop was nominated for the “business longevity” and the “charity/social enterprise” awards at last week’s event.

Wendy Howard, manager of Rhyl’s Mind charity shop, said she and her colleagues were “absolutely thrilled” to pick up their award.

She said: “People development is something that is so close to my heart. I am extremely proud of the work we do with our volunteers to develop their skills and confidence.

“We have had many volunteers come to us over the years having no confidence in themselves, and asking to work in the background as they are too nervous to work on the sales floor.

“We can always accommodate these requests but find that, after training in our ‘backup’ areas, their confidence builds and they feel ready to tackle the shop floor.

“We work together developing their skills at a rate they are comfortable with, right up to ‘lead volunteer’ status.

“This award has recognised and rewarded us for the work that we, as a team, put into developing our people.

“We are incredibly grateful to all of the people who voted for us in this category.”

You can offer your services to volunteer at Rhyl’s Mind shop by emailing rhylshop@mind.org,uk, or call in to the shop for an application form and a chat.

More than 150 people attended last week’s ceremony, including business representatives from the finalists, their guests, dignitaries and partnering organisations.
