A REFRESHING and exhilarating charity event took place at Prestatyn Central Beach yesterday (February 25) in aid of a hospice based in St Asaph.

The Big Dip was held to raise funds for St Kentigern Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care services, free of charge, for adults across North East Wales.

It was open to all, whether you're a seasoned swimmer or just looking for a fun day out, with participants encouraged to dive into chilly waters and feel the adrenaline rush of this challenge.

In 2023, the annual hospice running costs exceeded £2.6million, which equates to more than £7,252.37 per day.

Just 28 per cent of this came from the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board; the equivalent of funding to support the hospice for 93 days of the year.

A St Kentigern spokesperson said: "Orgainsing this event was nothing in comparison to the challenge undertaken by the 131 incredible participants who braved the waves on this chilly morning.

"It was wonderful to see so many people come together to support each other and the hospice despite the freezing conditions.

"We are extremely grateful to all the volunteers, Rhyl Coastguard Rescue Team and St John’s Ambulance who played a vital role in bringing this event to life.

"If you, like me, are in awe of those who took part, please show your support by sponsoring them or sharing their stories: https://bit.ly/BigDipJustGiving."
