NEW players are desperately needed for a bowling club after membership dropped from 175 to just 25.

Meliden Crown Green Bowls Club fear they will struggle to put out an 'A team' and a 'B team' this season which starts in April 2024. There is also concern members are in danger of losing the club due to lack of players.

Steve Quayle, chairman of the club, is trying to keep the club the alive.

"In the year 2000 the club had 175 members, you were lucky to get a game," he said.

"Three or four matches would be played each day due to the high volume of membership.

"Sadly old age, change in peoples habits and Covid has depleted players numbers into less than 25. Covid hit us very hard. We are in danger of losing the bowling club due to lack players. It would be a massive loss to the club and the players. It is a very popular sport.

"Games and matches are played on a Tuesday afternoon for those aged over 60 and on a Thursday evening for those under 60, or in the 'A' or 'B' team, and a ladies team on a Wednesday afternoon. On a Saturday morning, there is a friendly get-together.

"Bowling is a great way of having a little exercise and also associating with others.

"Other members of other clubs, that are not getting a game due to their club having a lot of members, are quite welcome to come and join our club."

Steve is making his appeal ahead of the bowling club re-opening on March 9.

He said "Those that are interested or have never played the game of Crown Green bowling before, come and see the club on March 9 at 10am. This is when we officially open.
