WORK to remove kiosks that have stood on Rhyl promenade for more than 50 years is to start today.

The five kiosks – four of which are situated by the former SeaQuarium, and one near SC2, closed on June 4 2023.

Work to the remove the kiosks was put on hold last year; the local authority said in August 2023 that work wouldn't take place until the "council is satisfied that there will be no detrimental impact to the animals at the SeaQuarium.”

The SeaQuarium has since closed.

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County said: "The work on the removal of the kiosks starts on Monday, January 8, with the work set to be completed by the end of this month."

Balfour Beatty were initially expected to start work to demolish the kiosks in July 2023.

The beachfront kiosks are owned by Denbighshire County Council but were leased to tenants. The local authority said the structures have to be removed in order to deliver the defences scheme;  the new sea wall on the promenade is about one and a half metres higher.

The SeaQuarium, established 30 years ago, closed in November 2023. The attraction attributed its closure to the coastal works.

It said at the time: "The noise, disruptions and vibrations from coastal defence works has and will continue to impact the welfare of our animals to the point where we believe it is in the interest of their welfare if we rehome them.

“While we are saddened by this closure, unfortunately we have no other options. We are fully committed to working with Denbighshire County Council to ensuring the wellbeing of our beloved seals and marine animals."

Dr James Davies, MP for Vale of Clwyd, said: "It is a sad day for Rhyl to be losing these kiosks. They may be a little dated but they have been a prominent feature on the seafront for many years, sustaining small businesses and providing a welcome to visitors.

"Once again, I call on the council to guarantee their replacement as soon as possible."
