A PUB in Dyserth which closed temporarily after suffering thousands of pounds’ worth of damage from the flooding caused by Storm Babet has welcomed customers back for the first time since.

The New Inn, on Waterfall Road, was hit particularly hard by the rain on October 20, and had been shut for six weeks before it re-opened today (December 1).

Jill Carmichael, who runs the pub, said that repairs following the flooding damage have cost more than £60,000 but added her delight at being able to resume business at last.

She said: “It’s been a very hectic few weeks, getting it all together, but it’s nice to be back open again now.

“We did a little soft opening last night, and there are still a few things to do, but all of the new furnishings and floorings are in.

“We’ve been steady today, but we’ve got an awful lot booked in to come down tonight. We’re all excited and nervous!

“It easily cost us in excess of £60,000 in electrical equipment, flooring and decorating. It’s been a very expensive time, and we’re still petrified that it could happen again.”

The New Inn has returned with the same opening times as previously, following what Jill described as “the worst (damage) we’ve seen for 20 years”.

Talks are ongoing between residents, Denbighshire County Council and Natural Resources Wales to develop a flood alleviation scheme for Dyserth after Storm Babet devastated the village.

Jason Vernon, who runs his vintage store Retroelectro from his Dyserth home, is helping to put together a community group in the village, and has held several meetings on the issue so far.

Jill added: “Jason Vernon and Cllr David Williams (Dyserth ward) have been amazing, and are trying to do their best for the village, because we do seem to keep getting ignored.

“It happened to us two years ago, but not as badly as this. This is definitely the worst we’ve seen for 20 years – we couldn’t get the water out, and no emergency services came to us at all.

“We’ve done a massive refurburishment, with all new signage and décor, and we just wanted to make sure that we were open in time for Christmas.”
