THERE are no plans to use Pontins’ Prestatyn Sands Holiday Park to house asylum seekers following its closure, the MP for Vale of Clwyd has said.

James Davies MP said he was informed as such by the Home Office last night (November 30), after Pontins confirmed the park has shut its doors with immediate effect earlier yesterday.

Prestatyn Sands was built in 1971, and was also known as the location for the shooting of the 1973 film, Holiday on the Buses.

It was one of two Pontins parks to be confirmed as closing for good yesterday, along with its site in Camber Sands.

Dr Davies said: “The announcement of the closure of Pontins Prestatyn Sands is unexpected. I am requesting further information from the owners, Britannia Hotels.

“The site has had a bad reputation for some time and I hope this news brings the potential for welcome change to benefit the town.

“I have sought and received confirmation from the Home Office this evening that there remains no intention to use the site to house asylum seekers.

“My thoughts are with all those employees affected by the closure.”

Pontins said that customers whose bookings will be affected by the park’s closure will be contacted and refunded.

Meanwhile, record label Tidy Trax had been planning to hold a "wet and wild weekender" at the site during the weekend of July 5-7, 2024, and said it was "shocked and concerned" by the news.

A statement from the label yesterday read: “At 3pm today, received an email from Pontins with this surprising news, and we share in the shock and concern that you may be feeling.

“Rest assured, our team is actively working to engage with Pontins to gather more information and clarity on the situation.

“We understand the impact this may have on your plans and are committed to keeping you informed.

“We will provide an update within the next 24 hours as soon as we have more details.”
