A SECTION of the Rhyl promenade remains closed after a truck was swallowed by a huge sink hole last week.

The incident happened on Thursday, 5 October, when a bin lorry plunged through the road surface, with about a third of the vehicle disappearing underground - fortunately nobody was injured.

The prom is still accessible for pedestrians and cyclists and barriers have been placed around the hole, which has been filled.

The council are now in communication with flood defence contractors to see the extent of the damage, and the necessary next steps.

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: “Our highways team has met with Balfour Beatty, the company contracted to complete the flood defence work in Rhyl, to request they carry out a Ground Penetrating Survey (GPS) on behalf of the council.

“This will determine whether there are any other voids in the area.

“The hole has temporarily been filled after the council’s vehicle was removed and will remain this way until the interpretation of the GPS is completed, which will help inform our decision on how to repair the damage.

“The section of the promenade effected by the incident has been fenced off appropriately and pedestrian and cyclist access to the area will not be impacted by the situation.”
