THOUSANDS of people enjoyed themselves at the centenary Prestatyn Carnival today (July 22).

The carnival, which began in 1921, has survived a world war and a worldwide pandemic, yet has remained a popular feature of the town, thanks to the hard work of the organisers (Prestatyn Carnival Association) and the enthusiasm of patrons.

This year’s event was no different, with a parade taking place from midday, filled with bands, dancing troupes, may princes and princesses and rose queens from Prestatyn and nearby, and other entertainers.

Border Morris Dancing group Clerical Error thrilled crowds with their colourful costumes and performance, while Prestatyn High Street trader Granny Pats Tuck Shop offered face painting, glitter tattooing and balloon modelling.

Bands that performed in the parade and at the fairground included Rhyl Youth Marching Band, Rhyl Silver Band, Cambria Band, The Wirral Pipes and Drums, Band of Number 2 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets (including cadets from Prestatyn), and the unmistakeable, booming Batala band.

Fire dancers, drag queens, and a Ukrainian community group also took part.

Despite the threat of rain all day, and light drizzle from time to time, crowds turned out in huge numbers to cheer on the parade, which made its way down to the fairground.

The fairground was made up of classic rides, with waltzers, a Ferris wheel, a pendulum swing, bouncy castles, and dodgems just some of the things on offer for thrill-seekers.

Food and drinks stalls, many of which were independent and from the region, were present, and dance competitions and queen, princess and prince showcases took place.

Donkey rides were on offer with Alwood Donkeys, which gave children the chance to ride on four donkeys, aptly named Homer, Marge, Legend and Paddy.

Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies was in attendance, and told the Journal: “We’re fortunate that the weather held out, and it’s great that it’s the centenary celebration.

“It’s great for the town, and to see money raised for so many good causes, it’s been a lovely day.”
