THE quick action of a Rhyl man has made him a hero amongst the yachting community of the Caribbean.

Julian Thomas, who chose the sailing life of the warm island waters several years ago, has now made a lifelong friend of a lady who collapsed during a Sunday church service last September.

Former jeweller in the Rhyl family business of Thomas' Jewellers on Wellington Road, Julian, 57, opted for a new life in the Caribbean thanks to his love of yachting.

With his sailing partner Vanita Fowden, Julian was attending the service in Frequente, Grenada, when when he realised the lady beside him had stopped breathing and was turning blue.

"I called out for a doctor, but there was no answer," said Julian.

"I just focused on the Royal Yachting Association's first aid course I had recently completed again and gave her mouth to mouth.

"I heard the pastor of the church say 'she's gone', but I kept on blowing and after a minute she gasped and opened her eyes, but she was completely out of it. I had to bundle her in a car and drive to the hospital. We are best of mates", he added.
