AN AWARD-winning pub in Abergele has returned with a new landlady in charge following its initial closure earlier this year.

The George & Dragon, on Market Street, welcomed back customers today (June 2), and is celebrating the occasion with a re-opening party from 5pm, as well as free curry or chili and live music.

It has been taken on by new landlady Michelle Partington after Lee Murphy, who had owned the pub for nearly 11 years, decided not to renew its contract with Star Pubs & Bars.

Lee initially closed the pub on January 30, before it re-opened for a short while under a temporary management team.

A post from The George & Dragon read: “There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make it a wonderful experience for you all when you next visit us.

“We have undergone a deep clean and tidy, inside and out. Also, the phone line back is in use, and, most importantly, there is a revamped pool table to make it a better gaming experience.

“We also have a new addition - a second games machine.

“Thank you all for your continued support. It will be worth the wait!”

A spokesperson from Star Pubs & Bars yesterday (June 1) confirmed to the Journal: “We are delighted to announce that a new operator has taken on The George & Dragon in Abergele.”

In 2019, The George & Dragon was named the best community pub in the Conwy district, and in 2017, won the gold prize for community pub at the Best Bar None awards.
