A NUMBER of caravans have been seen parked on Rhyl Rugby Club's fields.

This morning (May 6), Cllr Brian Jones, who represents Rhyl Ty Newydd ward on Denbighshire County Council, said he saw "circa 15 vehicles" at Tynewydd Fields.

Police were also spotted attending the scene this morning.

Cllr Jones said: "There are 'Travellers' at Rhyl Rugby Club. The club is closed today.

"I went down earlier this morning to look. (There were) circa 15 vehicles on the grounds.

"Denbighshire County Council and North Wales Police are aware.

"The coronation weekend at the club has been ruined. There was a wedding reception booked in for this afternoon, plus other activities.

"I really feel for all of those people."

Lee Blackmore, manager of Rhyl Rugby Club, added: "There was a wedding booked for this afternoon, and guests were in the club dressing the room.

"We also have bookings for Sunday carvery, along with approximately 150 children due to play.

"I can only apologise to the people affected.

"All of the staff who are locked out, I will promise to pay for the time lost through no fault of their own."

A North Wales Police spokesperson said: “North Wales Police are aware of an unauthorised encampment at Rhyl Rugby Club, and are working with colleagues from Denbighshire County Council.”

Attempts have been made to contact Denbighshire County Council for further comment.
