A RHUDDLAN farm and holiday park has made a step towards sustainability by becoming entirely solar-powered.

Abbey Farm partnered with Rhyl-based company JM Renewable Solutions to have a 25kW solar energy system installed at its premises.

It comes amid a sharp increase in running costs, so Celia Williams, who owns the family-run park, hopes it will become their business to become more “self-sufficient”.

Caravan site on Rhuddlan farm crowned 'best in Wales'

She said: “For us, it’s about being more sustainable and self-sufficient for the future, because energy costs for the farm are obviously increasing year on year.

“With our campsite now, we’re recognising that our energy costs are going to go through the roof, so the greener side of things is more important for us.

“It’s a renewable system, so we’re not buying any electricity off the grid; we’re producing our own by using the sun.

“The whole site is 100 per cent solar-powered now. We had no grant funding or anything for this; it’s all self-funded.

“It was important for us to work with a local business, and they (JM Renewable Solutions) were great.”

Abbey Farm, which opened in 2021, was previously awarded “gold” from Visit Wales for its hand-crafted ensuite glamping pods.

It was also named “best caravan site in Wales” at the Campsites.co.uk Camping and Glamping Awards 2022.

Celia’s husband's family have been farming on the land for more than a century.

The installation process was completed by JM Renewable Solutions in two days.

It involved the installation of the solar panels and the electrical work required to connect the system to the grid.

Daniel Miller, senior project estimator at JM Renewable Solutions, said: “We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with Abbey Farm on this project.

"And we're delighted to hear that the system is performing as expected and saving them around £7,700 a year on their electricity bill.

"It's always gratifying to see the positive impact our work can have, and we're delighted that Abbey Farm is happy with the system we installed for them.

"Knowing that we were able to help them take a step towards a more sustainable future is why we do what we do.

"We're grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Abbey Farm on this project, and we look forward to continuing to provide top-notch renewable energy solutions to businesses throughout the UK.”
