THE wife of a “true ambassador for golf in North Wales” has paid warm tributes to her late husband.

Roger Lewis, who lived in Llandudno, died aged 68 on Wednesday, March 1.

His funeral will take place on Monday, March 27 at 2pm at Colwyn Bay Crematorium.

Donations to St David’s Hospice have been encouraged after the charity looked after Roger during the last two weeks of his life at his home.

His wife, Ingrid Lewis, former Bay of Colwyn town manager, celebrated the life of a “champion for golf in North Wales”.

She said: “Roger was a true ambassador for golf in North Wales in the years running up to the 2012 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.

“Working with the committees of all the clubs throughout North Wales, he encouraged them to join forces and promote the area as a whole for golf tourism.

“He hosted meetings, helped develop joint promotional literature and ensured their effective distribution.

“A force of nature, he was determined that as many clubs as possible were able to take advantage of the grants that became available at that time ensuring that North Wales golf was seen in a positive light.

“He actively supported the development and promotion of high-profile televised tournaments.

“Playing off scratch on a good day, Roger travelled the world, attending key tournaments, playing in Pro-AMs, hosting family trips to North Wales and representing Wales at international golf exhibitions.

“He was always spreading the North Wales message, and ensuring that golf in North Wales was highlighted.

“His sheer will power and appetite for life and adventure combined with his many achievements in the golfing world provides a lasting legacy. He will be very sadly missed.”
