A CARE home's very own "distinguished grandmother" marked her 105th birthday with cake and friends who have become family.

Margaret Ann Gray, who is better known as Nancy, is a resident at Belmont House in Rhyl.

She celebrated the landmark age on Thursday, March 9.

Krishna Boyrangee, of Belmont House, said: "Nancy had a lovely day. She was happy and was more vocal than normal which is nice. She knew it was her birthday. She had a message from King Charles.

"Sadly the home has active Covid at present and we were restricted in terms of what we could do. Nancy had cake in the lounge area which was decorated with balloons."

Nancy is living with dementia. She never married and has no children, but Krishna said at the care home she is very much treated as family.

Nancy, who has two brothers, was brought up by her step-family. It is understood she has lived in Rhyl most of her life.

Before starting work as a housekeeper / chambermaid, she used to help our in her father's ice cream shop.

She later joined a hospital where she worked for several years as a clearner - a job she enjoyed "hugely".

Krishna said: "Nancy is a very loving and caring person with a wonderful sense of humour. Sadly she does not talk a lot nowadays due to her dementia and deteriorating health.

"When she was first admitted to Belmont House, she became very close to one of the other residents, Mabel, who used to ‘mother’ her. They used to sit together in the lounge chatting away, enjoying each other's company. They now share a bedroom together."

Krishna described Nancy as "very precious".

"She is very precious to us all," he added.

"Since her arrival she is treated as the home’s pre-eminent grandmother.

"She is spoiled by all the staff who cannot do enough for her."
