THE chairman and trustee of a care home is stepping down at the "ripe old age" of 89 after four decades in the job.

Michael McEvoy is standing down after more than 40 years as trustee at charity-registered Dolanog residential care home in Rhyl. He served the last 33 as chairman.

Mr McEvoy, a former journalist, broadcaster and reporter who was appointed OBE for his services to North Wales in numerous public and charitable roles, said: "It has been a huge privilege to have served in this voluntary capacity all this time, but having now arrived at the ripe old age of 89, it is clearly in the best interests of Dolanog that I make way for a new leader at the helm.

"This decision is made easier by having a first-rate successor to step up."

Dr Malcolm Pritchard, who has served as vice-chairman for the past five years, is a retired former Rhyl GP head of practice.

Mr McEvoy said: "As a family man and universally respected Elder at Clwyd Street Chapel, I know he will prove an exceptional contributor to maintaining Dolanog's enviable reputation as a provider of quality care for all our elderly dependent residents."

Dr Pritchard said: “As this long era of service comes to an end, I am honoured to become chairman of a Board of Trustees who are supportive and passionate about maintaining the high standards set by our uniquely experienced chairman.

"Michael McEvoy leaves Dolanog on a solid foundation, having instilled in everyone connected to the charitable trust a duty of care for the benefit and wellbeing of its staff and residents.

"We are proud to be known as a genuine 'home from home' and aim to retain that distinction.

"This will enable him to still keep in touch and be available to call on, which I am sure will often be the case."

In his goodbye message, Mr McEvoy spoke frank about the "dire financial situation" facing care homes in the region and he is urging the Welsh Government and "all North Wales county councils" to realise.

He said: "Recruiting care staff is an absolute nightmare and unless this demanding and vital work is made significantly more attractive and better paid,

"I fear for the future of many seriously struggling homes."
