A COMMUNITY hub and a kebab house in Rhyl have collected donations to send to Turkey after the country was hit by an earthquake last week which has killed thousands.

The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6, is more than 35,000 people across Turkey and Syria, while thousands more have been pulled from the debris.

Both High Street Hwb (1-4 East Parade) and Bodrum Kebab House (10 Water Street) appealed for essential items to be donated, which will be taken to the Turkish Embassy in Manchester.

From there, the goods will be flown to Turkey.

Stephen Wright, of High Street Hwb, said: “We had about four donations of clothing with some food mixed in too, in what was a short-run appeal.

“Thank you so much to everyone that donated and showed so much care and love for others.

“Your donations are now on the way to Turkey, where they will help so many people in need.”

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has declared a three-month state of emergency in the 10 provinces affected the worst by the earthquake.

It struck at 1.17am GMT, at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.

Ramazan Topac, owner of Bodrum Kebab House, is from Turkey himself, and his mother, father and sisters still live in his home country.

He added: “We’ve already sent them about 500 tonnes to empty off a lorry! If there are brand-new items, I can send them, but it’s not worth sending second-hand things over there.

“At the moment, we have enough clothes and shoes, but they’re just looking for things like more blankets, coats and tents.

“We will be in contact with the embassy and if there is a place (for more donations), they’ll tell us, and we’ll try to collect them.”
