THE family of a a girl from Dyserth who died just aged 10 have reached out to thank their Wrexham AFC "family."

On Saturday, November 19, the Dragons hosted a team of charity bucket collectors from Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospices where Megs Whieldon, a huge Wrexham fan, had attended for therapy sessions since early 2020.

Generous football fans dug deep in and around the Racecourse ground and raised a fantastic £2,107 in Megs’ memory during the tie with Aldershot Town.

Mother, Sue Whieldon, said: “We were just blown away by the kindness and generosity of the Wrexham family.

“We are extremely grateful for every penny donated in our Megs’ name and a three point win made the day even sweeter.

“A huge thanks goes to all the ‘bucketeers’ who went out voluntarily to collect the fantastic sum. We really are so grateful.”

Megs suffered with a rare genetic condition.

Since February 2020, she attended Tŷ Gobaith hospice in Conwy with her family for therapy sessions but the youngster sadly died in March 2022.

Her younger brother Dan continues to be supported by the hospice.

The Whieldon family are huge Wrexham AFC fans and even hold season tickets for The Dragons.

The Whieldon family have been running a Just Giving page for the hospices and that currently stands at £1,176.

Catrin Dowdeswell, Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith area fundraiser, who has worked closely with the Whieldon family and Wrexham AFC, said: “We are so grateful to the Wrexham AFC community and players for getting involved with Saturday’s collection.

“They raised a fantastic £2,107 which will be match-funded and doubled by our Final Moments Matter campaign, which ensures the very best end of life care is available for children and their families in the area.

“It was a fitting tribute to Megs from the fans of the club she loved.”

She said: “Megs really loved the football, the build-up, the music, the atmosphere and being part of a crowd. We went to our first match in 2016 and were made to feel so at home there and really part of the Wrexham family.

“In 2019, both the kids got to be mascots on the pitch with the team which was the highlight of the year for them.

“She would have loved all the magic that is around the club at the moment."
