RUTHIN Town dodged a potential banana skin to make it through to the third round of the Welsh Cup.

Denbighshire rivals Rhyl 1879 were their hosts in the national competition and a pair of second half strikes saw Ruthin safely through.

In making progress in the competition, Town consigned the Lilywhites to their first competitive defeat in more than a year.

Over the 90 minutes, it was a pretty even contest between the Ardal North West League hosts and their Cymru North opponents.

Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas told the club's website: “First half went in 0-0 and being honest we were the better side and started poor within two minutes (of the second half) and they (Ruthin) are a decent outfit.

"We more than matched them for the entire 90 minutes but those little percentages where you need to step cost us the game.

"There wasn’t much gap between the two teams and disappointed to go out of the cup, now be dust ourselves down and concentrate on the league – our ‘bread and butter’."

Following a goalless opening period, Ruthin got their noses in front just two minutes into the second half.

Llyr Morris was given far too much space to run into the box and place the ball past home keeper Wilmot.

One became two when Gwion Owen hit a fierce shot that took a wicked deflection off Rhyl skipper Reece Fairhurst, leaving Wilmot with no chance.
