THE chairman of Wales in Bloom, Peter Barton-Price, came to Prestatyn railway station yesterday (September 27) to present a town community group with a special certificate.

Ian Lifford, chair of Friends of Prestatyn Railway Station, received the “Level 5 – Outstanding” certificate in the RHS’ “It’s Your Neighbourhood” competition from Peter.

It will now be proudly displayed in the railway station’s booking office.

In his remarks about the station’s entry, this year’s judge, John Woods, said: “This is by no means an easy site to work on, given the obvious health and safety considerations, as well as the practical effort required to maintain the planting boxes on the island platform.

“Well done all! The plantings, both in the station car park and at the bottom of the footbridge on the town side, were also excellent.

“Public art has very often an important role to play in marketing a town or area, and none more so than Rhodri the Rambler!

“Very well done to all involved in this project. I look forward to seeing the proposed mural.”

Peter congratulated the group on retaining Level 5, and especially in employing gardening practices appropriate to the area, with a good plant choice, maintenance, presentation and management, creativity and overcoming site difficulties.

Ian thanked the team of volunteers who work throughout the year to ensure that Prestatyn railway station is looking its best.

He also thanked as well as staff at the booking office, Transport for Wales and Network Rail for their support, as well as group members for their help each Tuesday and Saturday evening, and the Sunday morning litter pickers.

Work is now underway to remove the summer bedding plants and replace them with pansies, violas, primulas and heathers.
