A YOUNG rugby player assaulted police when a night out with Rhyl teammates went downhill after they’d been drinking “shots,” a court heard today (August 15).

Defence solicitor Nia Dawson added that Matthew Williams, 18, of Regent Road, Rhyl, came from a good family and everyone was “mortified.”

He was ashamed and worried that the conviction would affect his apprenticeship as an electrician.

The teen pleaded guilty to assaulting three PCs on July 31 at Rhyl after they were called to a disturbance in a kebab house.

He also admitted being drunk and disorderly.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told a district judge at Llandudno court that attempts had been made to calm Williams but he had to be taken to the ground.

During “sustained” resistance, he had spat at the three officers and was placed in a “spit guard,” Mr Espie said.

Judge Gwyn Jones imposed a six-month suspended custodial term with a rehabilitation activity.

Williams must do 140 hours of unpaid work and pay £100 compensation to each PC.

Judge Jones told him spitting was “utterly offensive.”

But the teen had no previous convictions and was mortified by his behaviour.
