DENBIGHSHIRE councillors will discuss how to proceed with a funding bid for several regeneration projects tomorrow – in direct competition with Conwy for the MP’s support.

Denbighshire County Council cabinet members will meet at Ruthin’s county hall to discuss the UK Government Levelling Up Fund.

Several projects could benefit from the fund, including St Peter’s Square in Ruthin and St Peter’s Square clock tower, which could be restored.

The funds could also pay for a new entrance and exhibition space at 46 Clwyd Street, a west wing and gazebo restoration at Nantclwyd y Dre, green space improvements at Cae Ddol, catering facilities and cycle paths at Moel Famau and enhanced facilities at the Loggerheads building.

The money could also improve Bryneglwys School and pay for a new community centre at Gwyddelwern.

The fund was last discussed at a previous meeting in November last year, in which Denbighshire’s cabinet granted the chief executive and senior officers delegated authority to submit a bid.

The bid for funding was originally a joint bid for the Clwyd West constituency together with Conwy County Council, who are now pursuing the funds alone.

Consequently, Denbighshire must again debate and agree on how to proceed.

The report being considered says meetings between Denbighshire County Council and MP David Jones have already taken place.

But whilst the MP can support both bids, he can only prioritise one, which forms part of the final scoring critera.

Denbighshire’s report reads: “It is not entirely clear why CCBC (Conwy) wish to pursue their own bid, however, it is clear that this is the way they wish to progress.

“Whilst DCC (Denbighshire) accept that CCBC are able to pursue their own bid DCC’s preference was to continue with a joint bid.”

The Government announced the launch of round two of the levelling up fund in March, and the council has until 6 July 2022 to apply.

Successful bidders must have spent the funds by March 31, 2025.
