THIS week’s nostalgia rolls back the years to look at the Menai Bridge Bowling Club/Clwb Bowlio Porthaethwy.

The club was founded in 1934, and was opened by Edward, Prince of Wales (who would later rule as King Edward VIII before abdicating shortly after ascending to the throne).

It was designed by George Baxter, later landlord of the Mostyn Arms pub.

Situated on Beach Road, close to the Suspension Bridge, the club has long offered brilliant views of the Menai Strait, Anglesey and North Gwynedd, acting as a soothing backdrop for bowls players to enjoy the game.

Throughout the years, the club has become a fixture of the town, with its pristine green and cosy clubhouse now a staple of the Menai Bridge community.

The club regularly held local bowling meets, seeing success on a number of occasions.

Their teams are still competing regionally, and the club remains in good hands as they look to add more history after 88 years.
