NEIGHBOURS Laura Farrell and Sharon Frobisher organised a Platinum Jubilee picnic celebration on Friday (June 3) at Meliden Community Centre to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the British throne.

The event, arranged in partnership with The Miners Arms, who supplied a bouncy castle on their car park, was attended by those aged less than one year old, up to 90 years of age.

Laura said: “Everyone who attended really enjoyed the afternoon. There were mums and dads, grandparents and even great grandparents. It was nice to get together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.”

Sharon added: “The day started off quite wet, but the sun came out for the afternoon. We would like to thank everyone who helped with the celebration.”

Several of those attending the Platinum Jubilee celebrations had attended the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations exactly 20 years ago, also at the community centre, so there was a great deal of remembering going on.

Some of the attendees older than 70 were able to recall Princess Elizabeth becoming Queen Elizabeth II, and were happy to tell the young people there some of what they remembered.

Those attending also put their names in a visitors’ book as a lasting memory of the day.

Gerry Frobisher, former mayor of Prestatyn and Meliden, said: “I started the (visitors’) book, which contains over 1,500 signatures, on December 31, 1999 when the village celebrated the millennium.

“The book starts with the group attending the registered Millennium Beacon outside the Melyd Arms (now The Miners Arms) and the family evening in the Community Centre and the Melyd Arms.”
