TALENTED youngsters from across Denbighshire will be showcasing their cultural skills at Eisteddfod yr Urdd when it visits the county.

Schools from across the county will be competing in a wide range of stage competitions, with Denbighshire having broken the record for the most competition entries from any county in Wales.

Those competitions will include singing, folk dancing, action songs, cerdd dant, recitation, choral competitions, arts and crafts and a lot more.

Pupils from the county’s schools are also performing in two shows during the week, with both events sponsored by Denbighshire County Council.

The secondary school show, Fi di Fi, written by former Denbighshire pupils Angharad Beech and Ynyr Llwyd, will be performed on the Pafiliwn Coch stage on Wednesday, June 1 at 5pm by a cast of 60 children.

The primary school show, Ni yw y Byd, a celebration of music by composer Rhys Lloyd, will be taking place on the Llwyfan y Cyfrwy stage on the Maes on Thursday, June 2 at 7pm.

This will involve 150 children from various Denbighshire schools.

Geraint Davies, Denbighshire’s head of education said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring both shows during the week.

“This is an ideal opportunity to showcase the wealth of talent we have in Denbighshire schools and the fact that there are more entries from the county than anywhere else in Wales is a testament to the hard work and commitment of staff, pupils and parents/guardians in preparing for the Eisteddfod.

"Our youngsters not only learn new skills, but it also helps build confidence and provides a great opportunity to appear on the national stage.

“Our young people have been busy rehearsing over recent weeks and those rehearsals continue. We wish them every success in the shows, as well as the competitions throughout the week. It will be a week to remember.”

Director of the Urdd Eisteddfod and the arts, Siân Eirian added: “Children and young people have missed out on so many cultural activities as a result of Covid, so we’re looking forward immensely to the Eisteddfod, after having to postpone the festival for two years.

“We are very grateful to Denbighshire County Council for supporting both the primary and secondary school shows and in doing so, enabling so many local children and young people the opportunity to perform at the festival, and ensuring that the Urdd centenary Eisteddfod will be an unforgettable event for all those involved.”
