A THRIVING “Meals on Wheels” service based in Denbighshire has announced a new menu after receiving extremely positive feedback from clients in recent weeks.

Michelle Mellor, owner of Harrisons Bistro & Bar in Rhyl and Micky's Professional Catering Company, took on the service in mid-March, providing meals to homes of the elderly, vulnerable and housebound throughout the county.

With a team of 12 including two delivery drivers, and almost 40 clients to deliver to across Rhyl, Towyn, Abergele, Prestatyn, Rhuddlan, St Asaph, Dyserth and Henllan, the new menu aims to provide greater variety, and will be in effect from May 22.

Operating under the name “Micky’s Professional Catering Mobile Meals”, this is the third menu Michelle has created since she took on the service from former providers, Easy Living Meals on Wheels.

She said: “I’m just conscious that, sometimes, if people have the same meals for five or six weeks, it’s a bit repetitive. I’ve been asking what their favourites are, but they’re loving everything!

“It’s a big gamble for a lot of people. Its just not the elderly – that’s why I call it ‘community meals’. Sometimes, it’s people coming out of hospital that have had an operation, or something which stops them from being able to stand up and cook.

“A lot of families have said to me that it’s re-educating their mums and dads back into eating. There’s a guy who’s flown in from America to try and sort things out for his mum, and he’s just been blown away by it.

“I try to speak to each client, and try to deliver once or twice a week, just to meet them all and make it all a bit more personal - whereas you don’t get that with a microwave meal.

“What we found on the first menu was that not everyone wants smaller meals, so I’ve incorporated larger meals, like the big lamb shank on a Sunday, and the large fish and chips. At least they’ve got the option, then.

“We’ve put a mini cheese platter on, and lots of salads coming into the warmer weather, and home-made meals like my honey roast chicken with Italian potatoes.

“We’ve got two deliveries – we go out at 11am, and then back out in the evening, as well. We’re getting to capacity now, so what we’d do then is bring on another driver who would go out at 11.30-45am with the next run.

“We’ve got about 36 people at the moment, and that’s progressing all the time. I’ve got another three or four to phone this afternoon. They’ve already asked me about Christmas!”
