A MEMBER of the Welsh Senedd has entered the Snowdon  “no-toilet” row by suggesting that Britain's highest cafe should be reopened.

The multi-million pound Hafod Eryri building at the 3,560ft summit is shut until 2023.

This is because the mountain railway is only running to Clogwyn station threequarters up the mountain because of essential work on the highest part of the track being delayed because of Covid.

As a result trains are unable to service the cafe with food and stock or to transport staff.

Recently a mountain guide has claimed that desperate walkers have been defecating on a popular footpath.

But Janet Finch-Saunders, Tory member for Aberconwy has appealed to the Snowdonia National Park Authority to reopen the café, pointing out in a letter that toilets, food and drink and litter bins are no longer available.

Mrs Finch Saunders says: “With some individuals taking several hours to ascend and descend the lack of toilet facilities is an understandable health concern.

“Others have highlighted the closure of your building may discourage people from remaining hydrated during their climb due to their acknowledgement that they will be unable to access public toilets - thus potentially seeing climbers becoming seriously dehydrated.”

She claims that several local businesses were concerned that the closure of the building may reduce the number of tourists this summer.
