VALE of Clwyd MP, Dr James Davies, is encouraging people who care about sustainability and green travel to enter an exciting competition which could land them with a £10,000 prize and the opportunity to make 10 rail trips this year.

National Rail are looking for three chief environment officers, who will each win £10,000 to ditch the car, explore Britain by train to review some of the country’s hidden gems, and champion sustainable travel.

To qualify, all you need to do is fill in a form and post a 60-second video bringing to life a trip you have taken, explaining why you think you should be awarded the position and why you care about sustainability and green travel.

The link must be publicly visible so National Rail can view your video.

The three winners will be determined by a judging panel, made up of explorer and broadcaster Simon Reeve and travel bloggers Wanderlust Chloe and An Adventurous World.

Encouraging people in the Vale of Clwyd to enter the competition, Dr Davies said: “New research undertaken by the rail industry shows that British travellers increasingly care about sustainability in making their holiday plans.

“With up to 20 per cent of the population saying they ‘don’t know the most sustainable way to travel’, National Rail’s chief environment officers will lead the way in showing how rail travel can start a great UK holiday, connecting travellers smoothly to their destinations without the stress and hassle of an airport or the exhaustion of a long drive.

“The competition is designed to find three new chief environment officers, who will each receive a £10,000 prize fund to use towards travelling by rail over the summer period, and create fun ways to show the UK their journeys.

“Their goal will be to uncover some of Britain’s best locations accessible via rail, and highlight the many benefits of travelling by train – from relaxation to sustainability, with emissions for a train journey clocking in at two-thirds lower than an equivalent car trip.

“I know there are a great many people in the Vale of Clwyd who are passionate about protecting the planet and promoting green travel and I encourage them to enter this competition.”

Winners will be notified on May 12 and will need to be available to make 10 trips between May 12 and August 28.
