AN AEROSPACE engineer returned to her old primary school recently to discuss STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), and the career paths it particularly offers women.

Lucy Davies recently went to Ysgol Penmorfa, Prestatyn to deliver her “STEM session”, focused on her career as an aerospace engineer at BAE Systems.

She held the session for two Year Five classes, having worked for BAE Systems since September after completing her master’s degree in aeronautical engineering at Loughborough University last summer.

Lucy said “We spoke about what STEM is, what different types of engineers there are, what it means to be an engineer, and particularly highlighted women in STEM.

“I aim to be a visible role model for young girls aspiring for STEM careers. There is a very low percentage of women in engineering in the country – only 24 per cent of the workforce are women.

“Growing up, I never had that visible role model, so I struggled to see myself in the industry and it took me a while to see that it was something that I could do.

“It was great to talk to the students about careers in STEM and showcase that women can succeed in the industry, too.

“They asked lots of questions – we did an activity when they drew an engineer, and a lot of the girls actually drew women to start with, which was good, because they usually draw men first.”
